Your human body consists of five layers of energy. The first layer is your physical body. The outer four layers of energy are commonly referred to as your aura. Collectively, these five layers or "energy bodies" are the human energy field. An energy medicine practitioner treats all layers of the human energy field, not just the physical layer.
The Physical Energy Body - The first layer is our physical energy body. This is the layer that we generally think of as our physical selves. But, our physical bodies are also energy, same as the other layers of the body that most people cannot see or sense on a physical level.
The Etheric Energy Body - The second etheric layer of our energy body is located approximately one quarter to one half an inch (not more than one inch) from the physical body. Energy medicine practitioners who are adept at psychically sensing this layer have described it as feeling "webby." Much like a spider web, it feels sticky, or stretchy. It is also grey or grey-bluish in color. The etheric energy body has also been referred to as the blueprint or holograph of the physical body.
The Emotional Energy Body - The emotional layer of our energy body is the third layer. Centrally located among the five layers this body is the keeper of our feelings. It is here where both our fears and jubilations reside. This layer can be quite volatile when we are experiencing extreme high and low emotions.
The Mental Energy Body - It is in the mental layer where our ideas spring from. Our belief systems are also stored here. This is where our thoughts are assimilated and sorted out. In this layer our personal truths, or rather, our perceptions based on our experiences are housed.
The Spiritual Energy Body - The spiritual layer of the human energy field is the final layer. It has been said to be the place where our "consciousness" or "higher awareness" resides.
So how do you control these fields? They are a part of you, after all. Let's start with the first field of energy, your physical body. Do you know someone who can blush or get goosebumps on command? That is part of controlling your physical body. Being able to manipulate your own body will often be difficult, especially if in a stressful situation. A few examples would be to keep yourself from blushing in front of a crush or while receiving a reprimand, keeping a straight face when you hear something funny but cannot laugh, etc.. This skill comes through practice, and lots of it. Try standing in the mirror and trying to blush or looking at your arm and trying to give yourself goosebumps. This skill can also be helpful if you meditate as being still is integral.
The Etheric field is what most people think of as your energy. If you have ever felt like someone was touching your back or placing a hand on your shoulder without anyone being there, you have felt your Etheric field. It is the layer right on top of your skin and is often felt through your skin without touching it. To practice feeling the field, slowly move different objects over your skin [or vice versa] (but not touching your skin). After a while you will be able to feel the object.
The third layer is often home to anxiety and depression as well as joy and mental pleasure. Controlling these things are not easy, but I recommend meditation to bring them in to balance. I will be placing a guide to meditation on my resources page for your use.
The fourth layer is very important, as it holds all of your ideals. Meditation and deep thinking can help you exercise this layer. If you feel conflicted about what you believe in, this is the layer to attend to.
The fifth and final layer is often the most difficult layer to understand and interact with. It coincides with your Third Eye Chakra (There will be a post that follows on chakras.) This layer is home to your higher awareness. This may be exercised by spending time communing with your God(s) or considering existential questions.
